Obernolte Introduces Frontier AI Regulation Bill

Reps. Jay Obernolte and Lori Trahan have introduced the bipartisan Frontier Act, a proposed federal framework for regulating frontier AI systems. The bill would establish minimum safety requirements, use licensed independent auditors to monitor compliance, require disclosures around serious failures, and allow emergency pauses of models deemed to pose catastrophic risk. It would also shift much AI regulation to the federal level while preserving specified state authorities, creating a central debate over uniform national rules versus state-led oversight.
