Students Pass Student-Led AI Policy for K-12 Schools

Ninety-eight student representatives from all 50 states convened in Boston during America's Youth AI Festival and passed the nonbinding STUDENTS FIRST Act, a proposed framework for AI use in K-12 schools. The measure calls for early AI literacy, restrictions on AI use in graded assessments, disclosure and mastery requirements for permitted use, and human review of suspected misuse. It also addresses educator discretion, privacy and bias, funding inequities, and escalation procedures for school chatbots that detect a student crisis. AASA plans to share the proposal with its nationwide network of school leaders as districts develop their own policies in the absence of a national standard.
