Texas Regulators Seek More Authority Over Data Centers

Texas officials are moving to tighten oversight of rapidly expanding data centers, with Gov. Greg Abbott directing state regulators to protect residents from added electricity and infrastructure costs. The Public Utility Commission of Texas and ERCOT have adopted new grid-connection requirements and are seeking legislative authority to register large users, communicate directly during grid emergencies, and extend critical-infrastructure safeguards. Lawmakers are also examining data-center tax breaks, water-use requirements, and local concerns over facility siting.
