DoorDash Takes Drone Delivery In-House

The most useful way to read yesterday was as a day about control: control of the delivery network, control of protected airspace and control of aircraft in environments where conventional defenses are losing effectiveness.

Across commercial logistics, event security and conflict, the aircraft itself was only part of the equation. Permissions, dispatch systems, operator identification and resilient command links increasingly determine whether drones can scale—or be stopped.

DoorDash received FAA Part 135 air-carrier certification for DoorDash Air, giving it a regulatory foundation for commercial drone deliveries in the US. TechCrunch, Engadget and Axios reported that DoorDash Labs is developing the aircraft, ground infrastructure and handoff systems while the company continues working with Wing and Flytrex. DoorDash says it plans to begin deliveries in the fall, but the certificate does not provide blanket authority for autonomous or BVLOS operations.

Federal authorities disclosed that 59 drones were seized around Los Angeles-area World Cup venues and fan zones, part of roughly 700 interceptions and seizures nationwide. The national total largely confirms reporting from earlier in the month; more revealing yesterday was the Los Angeles operating detail. FBI drones helped locate pilots, allowing ground teams to issue citations and require aircraft to be surrendered. No weapons were found on the seized Los Angeles drones.

Published yesterday, an Institute for the Study of War review documented how Hezbollah expanded its use of FPV drones against Israeli forces in southern Lebanon from March through June. The reported use of decentralized cells, thermal cameras, staggered attacks and fiber-optic control links restricted Israeli movement and reduced the value of radio-frequency jamming. The attacks caused substantial casualties but did not force an Israeli withdrawal.

The World Cup figures demonstrate an enforcement-capacity problem as much as a terrorism problem. High incursion volumes require authorities to distinguish careless or uninformed pilots from genuinely threatening operators while preserving access for authorized public-safety, media and commercial flights. The absence of weapons among the Los Angeles seizures is an important restraint on interpreting the total.

For military and infrastructure defenders, jamming cannot be treated as a universal answer. Fiber-optic control, thermal night operations and attacks by several small aircraft at once increase the value of layered defenses that combine concealment, barriers, sensors and affordable interception.
