Canadian Mounties Use Drones to Monitor Northern Border Crossings

The Royal Canadian Mounted Police are using drones, helicopters, remote cameras, boats and ground patrols to monitor remote, largely unfenced sections of the Quebec-U.S. border. The operations focus on detecting migrant crossings and investigating networks that move people, firearms and drugs through forests, fields and the St. Lawrence River. Enforcement is complicated by difficult terrain, seasonal hazards and overlapping jurisdictions, while Canada applies a 2023 agreement under which most irregular asylum seekers entering from the United States are returned.
