CPSC Seeks Identifiable ER Records From Hospitals

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission is seeking identifiable emergency-room records from at least 100 hospitals by the end of 2026 through contractor Konza Health, as part of an overhaul of its product-injury surveillance system. The plan would expand beyond the traditionally de-identified, product-focused National Electronic Injury Surveillance System and has prompted questions about legal authority, required public notice, privacy compliance, data security, and the scope of records sought. Some hospital systems have declined or questioned participation, while the CPSC says the effort would modernize injury detection and that Konza would filter unnecessary information before sharing data with the agency.
