The estimated continent-wide effect was modest—roughly one additional case per 1,000 children since 1900—but the geographic redistribution is operationally important.
Grist reported that US power-sector emissions rose 4% in 2025 as coal generation increased 13%. Continuous demand from hyperscale data centers serving AI contributed to the rebound, although fuel economics also mattered: higher natural-gas prices improved coal’s competitiveness.
