National Academies backs climate attribution science
Ars Technica's John Timmer and Bytes Europe report that a new US National Academies of Sciences, Engineering and Medicine assessment concludes extreme-event attribution has matured substantially since its 2016 review. The report says improved models, observations, physical understanding, statistics and machine-learning methods have strengthened estimates of how climate change affects heat waves, rainfall and other extremes, while confidence remains lower for wildfires, tornadoes, hail and compound events. It also highlights growing relevance for disaster preparedness, infrastructure design and litigation, including climate-damages cases.

Côte d'Ivoire, Ghana, Togo and Nigeria saw intense rainfall, with some locations recording more than 140 mm in under 24 hours; reported deaths included at least 34 in Ghana, five in Togo and 59 in Côte d'Ivoire since May. The study found three-day rainfall intensity has risen about 23% since records began and that an event of this scale is now roughly five times more likely than in a climate 1.4°C cooler, though model-based estimates were more uncertain.
