A study in Communications Earth & Environment links orange-stained streams in Alaska's Brooks Range to thawing permafrost. Researchers traced the change to two pathways: higher-elevation thaw exposing pyrite-rich rock and lower-elevation wetlands producing dissolved iron that oxidizes downstream. The iron can stay suspended for more than 100 kilometers, reducing water clarity and threatening algae, insects and fish gills.

It shows warming is creating diffuse, hard-to-stop water-quality damage across remote Arctic ecosystems.
