New study maps Canadian forest growth thresholds

Nature published an analysis of 38,395 tree-ring chronologies from 4,179 Canadian sites over roughly 120 years. It found drought limitations already dominate nearly half of Canada’s forested area in the mid-to-late 20th century, while cold limitation is mainly confined to high-latitude and montane regions. The study identifies four regional response modes, including cold-to-drought shifts and reversals toward cold limitation, pointing to threshold-like rather than gradual forest-growth responses.

Plankton-derived MSA may boost cold-ocean cloud seeds

Phys reported a University of Helsinki-led Nature study using CERN’s CLOUD chamber to test methanesulfonic acid, or MSA, formed from atmospheric oxidation of plankton-emitted dimethylsulfide. Below about -10C, MSA formed new aerosol nuclei as effectively as sulfuric acid when trace ammonia was present, and it accelerated particle growth across the tested temperature range. The authors say current climate models undercount this pathway, with simulations suggesting higher cloud-condensation nuclei concentrations over cold oceans such as the Southern Ocean.

Why it matters

A better-accounted marine aerosol pathway could shift estimates of cloud cover, sunlight reflection and regional climate feedbacks over cold oceans.
