Study finds warming hastens groundwater nitrate pollution

ACS Publications reported a new study coupling a machine-learning emulator of a global hydrological model with the nitrate time bomb model for 1958–2100. The study found nitrate migration velocity increases across all climate zones except the tropics, with the strongest gains in cold and temperate regions. In arid regions, shallower groundwater can bring nitrate peak arrival forward by about 6 to 8 years, with local advances exceeding 20 years; hotspots include the North China Plain, South Asia and Western Europe.
