National Academies strengthens extreme-weather attribution findings

The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering and Medicine released a 252-page report on July 16 updating its 2016 assessment of extreme event attribution. The report says confidence has grown substantially in linking climate change to long-term shifts in extreme heat, cold, heavy precipitation and drought, while attribution remains weaker for specific hurricanes, typhoons and individual wildfire events. New CADI map projects climate-driven farm losses

Researchers at Spain’s CSIC-linked Institute for Economic Analysis launched CADI, the Climate-Induced Agricultural Decline Index, to project climate impacts on agricultural productivity through 2100 at 9.3-by-9.3-kilometer resolution. The tool combines FAO yield data with Copernicus climate records and IPCC scenarios while holding 2020 crop choices fixed and assuming no adaptation. Euronews reports the model finds one in six global croplands lost more than 10% of potential productivity over the past two decades, and that under a medium-high warming path nearly half the world’s population could live in areas with at least 5% agricultural-potential decline by 2041–2060.

The index provides a new, high-resolution way to identify where food insecurity, rural income loss and climate inequality may intensify first.

Aral Sea drying linked to major CO2 release

Grist reports on a new Science study led by Rafael Marcé of the Centre for Advanced Studies in Blanes estimating that the drying Aral Sea emitted 748 million metric tons of carbon dioxide between 1960 and 2022. Researchers collected sediment samples during a 2022 expedition and found roughly half the emissions occurred in the first 15 years after lakebed exposure. The study estimates another 605 million metric tons of CO2 could still be released from exposed sediments, with uncertainty because field cores reached only 50 centimeters deep.
