China Cancels 61.5 GW of Overseas Coal Plans image

Five years after Xi Jinping pledged to halt new Chinese coal projects abroad, a report says 61.5 GW of planned capacity has been cancelled, while 20.5 GW remains planned and 3.3 GW entered construction in the past year. The report identifies private investment and captive coal plants as gaps in the pledge’s reach, particularly in Indonesia. China-linked renewable projects are also expanding, but the pace of that growth does not eliminate the remaining coal pipeline.
