Ukraine's mid-range drones hit Russian rear areas
Business Insider reported on May 29 that Ukraine is using fixed-wing mid-range strike drones against Russian logistics hubs, warehouses, vehicles, command posts, and air defenses about 20 to 300 kilometers from the front. Taras Berezovets of Ukraine's Territorial Defense Forces said at a drone summit in Latvia that Kyiv is contesting the 50-150 kilometer "middle strike zone" Russia had treated as safe. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Defense Minister Mykhailo Fedorov said mid-strike capabilities are a growing priority, and Germany and Norway have announced plans to jointly produce thousands of such drones with Ukraine.
Why it matters
It shows Ukraine is extending drone pressure deeper into Russian rear areas while scaling production with foreign partners.

Business Insider coverageFAA creates World Cup no-drone zones
The FAA said on May 29 it will establish temporary flight restrictions over FIFA World Cup 2026 stadiums, fan events, and base camps across the United States, with all aircraft operations including drones barred within a 3-nautical-mile radius and up to 3,000 feet above ground level on match days unless cleared by air traffic control. Unauthorized drone flights can trigger fines up to $100,000, confiscation, and federal criminal charges. The agency will use its DETER enforcement program to speed identification and action against violations.
Why it matters
It is a major new drone-restriction regime tied to a global sporting event and backed by federal enforcement tools.

FAA coverageRomania drone crash triggers NATO anti-drone push
Al Jazeera reported on May 29 that a Russian drone crashed into an apartment building in Galati, eastern Romania, injuring two people after an overnight attack targeting Ukraine. Romanian authorities said radar tracked the drone in Romanian airspace before it hit the rooftop, prompting F-16s and a helicopter to scramble, evacuations, and a fire. Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan said Romania would sign an anti-drone contract within hours under the EU SAFE programme, while President Nicusor Dan ordered diplomatic retaliation by declaring the Russian consul in Constanta persona non grata and closing the consulate.
Why it matters
The incident highlights drone spillover risk for NATO territory and is accelerating counter-drone procurement.
