UK climate advisers call for workplace heat limits
The UK Climate Change Committee outlined measures on May 20 to protect against worsening heatwaves, floods and drought, including mandatory maximum temperatures for workers, cooling in hospitals and care homes, and public heatwave guidance. It said climate impacts already cost the UK up to £60 billion a year and could reach £260 billion annually by 2050, while adaptation would require about £11 billion a year through 2050. Trade unions backed a legal heat cap, and Environment Secretary Emma Reynolds said the government would consider the recommendations.
Why it matters
It could turn climate adaptation into enforceable labor, health, and infrastructure policy.

GB News coverageForecasters see a potentially historic El Niño
Miami Herald reports that a strong El Niño is developing in the central and eastern tropical Pacific and could become one of the strongest on record. Forecasters cited an 82% chance of El Niño by early summer and a 37% chance of very strong conditions by fall. For South Florida, the pattern usually increases wind shear and lowers Atlantic storm chances, but the risk does not disappear; Hurricane Andrew still made landfall during the 1992 El Niño season.
Why it matters
It could materially change the Atlantic hurricane outlook and coastal flooding risk in South Florida.

Miami Herald coverageUtah coalition advances community clean-power program
Utah Renewable Communities, a coalition of 19 cities, towns and counties, is moving to buy renewable electricity through Rocky Mountain Power and cut fossil-fueled power use by 2030. Local governments must approve ordinances by June 2; if they do, the utility will enroll customers, add a $4 monthly fee, and cover that fee for low-income households. The coalition says it plans to announce its first clean-energy project this summer and begin generating power by 2030.
Why it matters
It is a concrete, state-authorized pathway for community clean power in a coal-heavy state.

Heat can reduce solar output
A UK explainer says panel temperature, not air temperature, drives output losses in heatwaves, even though solar still produced 66.9 GWh on Britain’s hottest day on record.

OPEN QUESTION
Will the UK set a legal workplace heat cap?
The CCC recommendation only becomes consequential if ministers turn it into enforceable rules and decide how to cover outdoor workers.
OPEN QUESTION
Can Atlantic warmth offset El Niño suppression?
That determines whether South Florida and the broader Atlantic basin actually see fewer storms or only a partial reduction.
