Floods force NHS hospital closures
Carbon Brief's Josh Gabbatiss reported that at least 67 NHS hospital wards, departments and other sites have temporarily closed or relocated because of flooding over the past five years. Freedom-of-information responses from 148 of 162 trusts documented 30 incidents with detailed data, totaling more than 3,000 days of disruption, including maternity services, surgical theatres and a neonatal intensive-care unit. NHS England data cited in the investigation show flood incidents at English facilities have roughly doubled since 2021, reaching nearly 400 in 2024-25.
Why it matters
It shows climate-driven flooding is already disrupting frontline health services and exposing an adaptation gap.

Carbon Brief coverageUSDA extends biogas digester loan pause
Inside Climate News' Derek Harrison reported that the U.S. Department of Agriculture has extended its pause on new federal loans for anaerobic digesters through the end of the year. USDA said the move is financial, citing significant delinquency rates and realized losses in digester projects and warning that backing high-risk projects could threaten program stability. The pause affects manure-to-biogas systems used on concentrated animal feeding operations and has drawn criticism from environmental groups and industry.
Why it matters
It could slow federal support for a methane-reduction technology tied to large livestock operations.

Inside Climate News coverageBHP leak shows Pilbara climate delays
The Guardian's Christopher Knaus reported that leaked internal documents show BHP halted or delayed emissions-cutting projects in Western Australia's Pilbara, including a proposed iron ore processing and beneficiation facility near Jimblebar. A separate Guardian report said BHP continued buying diesel trucks for Pilbara operations even though internal materials described the move as misaligned with decarbonisation targets. The leaked material reportedly suggests some climate investments could be pushed back by as much as two decades.
Why it matters
The leak raises fresh questions about whether a major miner is matching climate pledges with capital spending.

OPEN QUESTION
Will NHS flood defenses catch up?
The closure tally suggests hospital resilience investment may be lagging behind worsening flood exposure.
OPEN QUESTION
Will USDA widen the digester pause?
The loan suspension could become a broader policy shift on manure-to-biogas support if losses persist.
